Best of Italy 2015
Good evening to everybody,
Tonight we jump start a new initiative that we believe is going to be appreciated by our Italian American community.
Every year we’re going to recognize, in public and on our website, an Italian American that deserves to be mentioned for his achievements in US and/or for his contributions to keep some of the Italian culture alive and productive.
For this first recognition I’m proud to bring to you an artisan, a Sicilian tailor: Carmelo Zizzo (applause).
Carmelo moved to New York in 1962 and to Phoenix in 1972 where he jump started his custom tailoring activity.
Now his son Feliciano and family are running the
Zizzo Tailor Design Boutique in Scottsdale.
I just went to visit them to meet Carmelo and to chat with him. And I was particularly impressed by Carmelo’s love for history, and his commitment to keep learning all the time with an ample set of interest areas.
And since he’s a proud Sicilian (born in Messina’s province), we started our chat with a famous Sicilian scientist: Ettore Majorana, a physicist that was originally trained by Enrico Fermi, and known for his neutrinos theory.
When young, Carmelo also (1st right) knew famous actors and movie directors like Monica Vitti (2nd left) who played in the unforgettable movie “L’Avventura” (1960) of Michelangelo Antonioni.
Aren’t they really cute in this picture?
We also discovered to have strong connections when we talked about tailoring schools, Carmelo saying that Torino was the best, and that he participated to the Forbici D’Oro yearly competition organized by the Maestrelli Foundation.
As you can see from the below list, the 1953 winner was my father Antonino Pace, from Sicily too!!

But back to Carmelo now, and let’s see his video interview done by Michael Tassoni (thanks again Michael. By the way Michael’s father was a tailor too and knew Carmelo).
As you will learn, the family boss was his grandmother and she was the one forcing Carmelo into the tailoring business! So please talk to Carmelo tonight if you want to discover more about his life adventures and visit Feliciano (aka Phil, in below picture) and Carmen (aka Carmelo) at the store for an excellent customer tailoring experience!
